Hannah from South Carolina

Age: 16

Profile:

A musician, Hannah plays marimba in her school’s marching band, and winter drumline, and oboe in the symphonic band. She is also the historian for her Junior Civitans group, and enjoys photography and some sports. She would like to pursue a career in atmospheric science as a meteorologist. Diagnosed at age 10, she was a youth ambassador for the Charlotte chapter of JDRF, and has spoken about her life with diabetes. “A cure for diabetes would be the best gift ever for me! No more having to figure out how much insulin to give for food that I eat, no more scraping icing off cupcakes at birthday parties, no more pricking my finger to check blood sugar, no more feeling dizzy with a low blood sugar, no more nightly blood sugar checks by my parents at 2 a.m., no more worrying about spending the night with my friends or going on an overnight trip . . . the list goes on! A cure would also increase my life expectancy.” As a delegate, Hannah hopes to bring awareness to others about her life with diabetes, to encourage and network with others who have this chronic disease, and leave an impression on Congress so they will set aside money for research to find a cure.
