An aspiring architect, Sydney would like to design pediatric doctor’s offices and children’s hospitals. Her Walk team, Sydney’s SuperStars, raised more than $400,000 for JDRF. She does her own site changes, dosing, pump usage, and carb counting. “In August of 2008 a very tragic thing happened, my sister, Mackenzie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It was the worst thing that ever happened to me, worse than when I got diagnosed. I was hoping that she wouldn’t get diabetes because it has been hard for me and life doesn’t seem fair and people always make fun of me. I didn’t want that for my little sister. The only bright spot about my sister having diabetes is that this year we had over 150 people on our walk team. I think it might be a new record for a family walk team in Philadelphia.” As a delegate, Sydney hopes to get Congress to use the bailout money for medical research, including diabetes, and care for people who can’t afford it. “My hope for the future is a cure for diabetes. I’m going to Washington, D.C., to make Congress understand how important it is.”
