Kaitlyn from New York

Age: 8

Profile:

Kaitlyn has struggled with her disease since being diagnosed at age two, experiencing highs and lows that seem to have no pattern. Her new continuous glucose monitor has helped with the problem, but it isn’t a cure. Her parents note how mature and responsible she is—and how she shouldn’t have to be, at just seven years old. As she began to take more responsibility with the management of her diabetes, she has begun to take a more active role in promoting awareness of type I diabetes in the community. This year, she asked a few local businesses and her school to display signs and brochures for the Westchester chapter of JDRF. Her walk team has contributed more than $80,000 to JDRF since she was diagnosed in 2003. As a delegate, she would like to let legislators know that support of research toward a cure for diabetes is crucial.
