Sam from Delaware

Age: 16

Profile:

Diagnosed at age 13, first by his brother who was taking an AP biology class and recognized his symptoms, and then by an endocrinologist, Sam tries to be like other kids and not let the disease get to him. He is a straight-A honor student at his high school and an aspiring engineer. He competed in the state FBLA and enjoys tennis, golf, video games, and is a percussionist. He is a member of the varsity gold and tennis teams. Sam uses an insulin pump, and a continuous glucose monitor during the week during golf season, to keep himself from going to low during meets. His family formed a Walk team 10 weeks after his diagnosis, Sam’s Squad, which has raised more than $27,000. “It is crucial that the U.S. Congress supports research toward a cure, as well as stopping the progression of diabetes in newly diagnosed patients. No one in my family has a history of diabetes; it was very frustrating to me that no one could adequately explain why this happened to me. More resources need to be devoted to help answer these questions and find a cure.”
