Lauren from California

Age: 17

Profile:

At 16, Lauren has experienced discrimination as someone with type 1 diabetes, and struggled to be a normal teenager, not to mention dealing with the day-to-day that people with her disease face. She has used her experiences for good, though, instead of letting them get to her. She has long been involved in projects working with families in need and hospitalized children, and is a member of a crisis-counseling group. She is captain of a JDRF Walk team, and has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars over the last seven years. She lobbied for diabetes funding with her congresswoman, and supported stem cell research legislation in her state. She also has received several community service awards. “I want to raise awareness of the effect of diabetes on children’s—particularly teenagers’—lives, and hope that this will help persuade Congress to continue to fund research toward a cure”
