These children with type 1 diabetes—ages 4 to 17, representing all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and five other countries—will converge on Washington, D.C. from June 22-24, 2009, to tell their stories and urge lawmakers to help find a cure.

Delegate: Evelyn
State: Massachusetts
Age: 6
Profile: Evie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a year and a half ago. Although she and her family are still trying to get used to the insulin shots and blood sugar monitoring, she is still active, enjoying swimming, soccer, and baseball. She also likes to draw, color, create crafts, and bake. One of her main accomplishments is that at five years old she has made it through her first year of having type 1 diabetes.

State: Ohio
Age: 14
Profile: A competitive swimmer, Tanner was the 2008 Ohio champion in both the 50 and 100-meter butterfly. “When I achieve a goal or place first at a swimming or track/cross country meet, I look and say wow! To know that I have dealt with all the carb counting, constant blood sugar checking, and the constant worrying, it all pays off.

State: Michigan
Age: 16
Profile: Maxwell, 15, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age four, and he can’t remember life without it. He uses an insulin pump, which makes his disease management easier. “I can eat whatever I want, do whatever I want to do, and go wherever life takes me. But I still cannot live without that absence of fear. I still need to watch myself as closely as I can to prevent a tragedy from occurring.

Profile: At 12, Taylor was diagnosed with diabetes. She hasn’t let that slow her down, though, and still enjoys fast-pitch softball, which she has been playing since she was seven. Taylor is a JDRF volunteer, participating in the Promise to Remember Me Campaign, and speaking with various congresspeople. Since she was diagnosed, she has been part of a Walk team that has raised more than $52,000.
